It’s Black History Month and we’re celebrating by shining the spotlight on our charity partners who are making history by enriching the lives of BIPOC youth in our communities. This week, we’re excited to introduce City Year Seattle.
Last month, Talking Rain partnered with City Year Seattle to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day by supporting the organization’s annual MLK Day of Service. Presented in the form of a Virtual Community Summit, participants had the opportunity to listen and learn from community leaders, engage in meaningful dialogue surrounding social justice issues, and work together on a colorful mural project that will be donated to City Year’s school partners to inspire and encourage students.
“I chose to serve with City Year because I loved working with my students and centering student voice is very important to me,” said Stefani Pacheco Garcia, a Civic Engagement Team Leader and Corp member with City Year Seattle. “Whether this happens in the classroom, or with projects including the schools we are at, we need to keep advocating for our students voices to be heard.”
Beyond celebrating the life, works, and impact of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., City Year Seattle is dedicated to empowering thousands of students in Seattle Public Schools to reach their full potential by addressing the lack of equitable access to educational opportunities. They challenge the educational status quo with tenacity, passion, and empathy creating moments where people can feel like they belong.
